Write Scripture On Your Heart

“Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”- Colossians 3:16

Having a 30-minute commute to Zion for the past 28+ years, gives me a lot of time to listen to Christian Radio on the way to school. It doesn’t matter which station I listen to, whether it be Q90, 90.1, 90.5 or The Family 91.5. Christian radio is so uplifting and encouraging, I love them all! One of my favorite songs these days is Leanna Crawford’s song ‘Still Waters’ based on Psalm 23. I especially love the line “Great Aunt Maurine said at 103, “Write Scripture on your heart for when you need it.”” It has been so true in my own life! We need to have the Word of God memorized for when we need it in this life. I distinctly remember while giving birth to one of my three children, there was a time when I called out to God with the Lord’s Prayer out loud for some relief and help right there in the delivery room. Grant it, it was a prayer, but none the less, one written in the Bible and He heard my prayer that day! There have been many other times when giving advice to a friend who is discouraged or struggling, I’ve quoted a Bible verse for encouragement. One of my favorite verses is 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.” This is such a comfort to me, and I hope it is to my friend also. Another verse I have used when my family has had discouraging situations is, “And we know in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 I’m sure you have verses written on your heart too. It’s so wonderful that the students at Zion, through all the years, have had to memorize Bible verses as part of their classwork. I can remember back in Ms. Natzke’s 1st grade class, lining up against the wall and waiting my turn to say my memory work. As the verse above states, we are to let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly. How else can this happen except by first, reading His Word as much as possible and memorizing verses. So, if you are reading this and currently have a student in school who is expected to memorize verses weekly, your encouragement in making sure your child learns the verse is so important! Sure, they are going to slack off, or maybe neglect to practice as much as they should, don’t give up on them, your efforts are seen by the one who wrote the Words! He will bless your efforts and help you. If they don’t give attention to God’s word now at a young age, they may never do it later in life. “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn away from it.” Proverbs 22:6 Your work is not in vain in helping your child to study, plus this also gives you a chance to internalize His word too! It’s a win, win! Write Scripture on your heart!

Prayer: Dear Lord, Thank you for your Word. Help us to make it a priority in our lives, to write it on our hearts for when we need it. It’s your guide for life and a love letter to us, give us a new heart to cherish it and study it as we journey through this life. We need your guidance every day. We love you Lord, in Jesus name we pray. Amen
