The Beginning and End
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come - the Almighty One.” -Revelation 22:13

Many events in our lives have a beginning and an end. As a child I counted down the days until Christmas or until my birthday. The day finally came and just like that the day came to an end. A vacation begins on a specific day, and it ends on another. Individual or team competitions begin and end. The season of winter begins on December 21st or 22nd and ends on February 28th or 29th if it is a leap year. The school year begins in August and ends in May. Life begins at conception and ends with our final breath when Jesus calls us home.
When the words Alpha and Omega first entered the English language, it was used as a title for God. The words alpha and omega were the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Knowing that we begin to understand why the words Alpha and Omega refer to the beginning and the end of something. As time went on, these words were used as an expression of the totality of something. Alpha and Omega was a good description of God because He was the beginning and the end of everything. In the beginning, God created the world and everything in it. He created life and He alone determines the end of life. In Revelation 22:13 God tells us that He is the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. God is the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come. God was there at the time of creation and He will come again on the last day at the end of time. God exists beyond all time. This is the truth of who God is.
It is very comforting to know that God is the Alpha and Omega of my life. He has been holding everything together in my life from the time I was growing in my mother’s womb, still is now, and will continue to do so until I die. Knowing this helps me to trust Him with everything going on in my life today and in the days ahead.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you that in your Word you have told us who you are. Thank you that you are with us every day of our lives from start to finish. Help us to trust in your perfect plan for our lives. In Jesus name, Amen.
