Safety
I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting. -Isaiah 50:6

What makes you feel safe? Is it the locks on your doors or the security light on your garage? Is it the airbags in your car or the roof over your head? All of these things certainly do protect us, but they are also all liable to fail. Airbags can malfunction, light bulbs burn out, locks can be picked. The unfortunate reality of our world is that we can never be truly safe, at least in a physical sense. Despite this, we know that the Lord watches over us and he protects us from dangers far greater than those who would break in and steal.
The famous words of Psalm 46 are helpful for us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” God is our refuge and strength, he is near to protect us. How does the Lord come near to us? In the one who offers his back to those who strike and his cheek to those who pull out the beard. The Lord comes near to us in the one who endures disgrace and spitting. Jesus Christ endured torture, mockery, and death. He took the punishment that we deserve so that we could be safe from sin, death, and the power of the devil.
Left to our own devices we would be in grave danger. The temptations of the devil and this sinful world would be far too much to bear , but Jesus Christ protects us from that. He defeats sin and the devil through his death and brings us safely into the Father’s house. It is there that we are truly safe “where neither moth nor rust destroys, and thieves do not break in and steal.”
Prayer:
O Lord, continue to protect your people from the temptations of this life. Keep all of us firm in the faith until we are brought safely into the full protection of your house. Amen.
