Rock Collection

Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. -Exodus 17:6

LENT DEVOTIONS

If you know anything about my husband, you’ll know about his love for rocks. Our house has collections of rocks everywhere. Sometimes on the kitchen counter or windowsill, sometimes in the living room, sometimes on the deck depending on size of the rock (or boulder). Andy collects rocks in his many caving adventures. Most of the time they have fun fossils or shiny geode bits in them. Those rocks are fun to look at and admire, but they aren’t going to provide any benefit for our family. They won’t make us millionaires because we have so many, they won’t put food on the table, and they definitely won’t provide us water.

We hear a different story about rocks in Exodus, however. The rock in Exodus, through God’s provision, produced water for the Israelites. God showed that he could make anything useful in His creation, even a rock. This is something that we couldn’t even begin to fathom during our day and age. Can you imagine if Andy tells God he is thirsty and he picks up one of the many rocks he has to get water? We’d have people coming for miles to see the cave tour guide who can make water with his rocks! Maybe God doesn’t provide for us in that exact way, but He sustains us in other ways. We look at what we have compared to the Israelites wandering in the desert and we can clearly see how we’ve been provided for. We have more than one tunic and pair of sandals, we have water freely flowing, and food readily available. God sustains us without the use of a rock, but through those who work around us to grow and make all we have. May we never need water from a rock, and always remember God’s abundant provision.

Prayer:
Thank you Heavenly Father for sustaining us through our lives here on earth. Thank you for the many blessings we have received. Let us remember where they all come from. Amen.
