LENT DEVOTIONS

Before we begin, let me preface this by saying that this is one of three devotions that I’ve written for this, and they all work together. They’re a bit of a three part story, if you will, about a little girl named Ellington going trick or treating for the first time. We’ll begin today, and the rest of the story will be found on future days throughout this devotional.
So picture the world’s cutest, but most strong willed little girl, one and a half years old and going trick or treating and collecting her own candy for the first time. Like most parents, before we walked out our door to go collecting, we rounded up our kids to lay the ground rules for how the next couple of hours would go. One of the most important of these being - we won’t eat any candy until we get back home. Easy enough, right? Well, at a year and a half old, it’s pretty hard to be handed a piece of candy at the first house, and simply put it in your bucket rather than in your mouth (and being told “no” leads to laying down on the sidewalk and screaming bloody murder (this may or may not be based on a true story)).
The Bible never told us that Adam and Eve laid on the ground throwing a fit after eating from the tree that they shouldn’t have, but the stories are very similar. In both cases people were told they could have almost anything with very few exceptions, but also in both cases all they could focus on was the one thing that they couldn’t have. Thankfully, even when we do wrong or have a narrow focus, God has promised us so much more than what’s right in front of us.
Prayer:
Lord, please help us to see the promise of all that you have in store for us. We know that it’s so much bigger and greater than what we can see or expect for ourselves. Amen.
