Let This Cup Pass

And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” -Matthew 26:39

In the Garden of Gethsemane, we are given unique insight into just how difficult the path that Jesus trod actually was for Him. In this prayer, He refers to the cup. Biblically, the cup refers to the wrath of God, and in this moment, Jesus realizes that this cup is just hours away from being poured out on Him.

In this very same moment, we see the strength of our Lord. As difficult as this moment may be, He unswervingly follows the will of His Father. In fact, Jesus knows what He must do. He knows what His Father has called Him to be. He is the Lamb of God who goes forth uncomplaining. “Not as I will, but as you will.” Jesus demonstrates His strength for our benefit. The cup of God’s wrath is poured out on Him, that we may be redeemed.

Prayer:

Dear Jesus, the path that you walked to the cross was incredibly difficult. Yet, you demonstrate your strength on our behalf by continuing to move forward, doing exactly what the Father has planned for You. Thank you for serving as the Sacrificial Lamb, that my sins have been forgiven. In Your precious name, Amen.
