Is the Lord Among Us?
And [Moses] called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?” -Exodus 17:7

How often do we ask that very same question that the people of Israel asked when they were wandering in the wilderness? “Is the Lord among us or not?” Maybe you ask this question when you watch the news or scroll social media. Maybe you ask this question as you watch the dwindling strength and declining health of a loved one. When we see the brokenness of our sinful world, the brokenness of our own lives, it is easy to immediately question what God is doing…It the Lord among us or not
It is an easy question to ask. And it is a question that God answers for us daily. In John chapter 1 we learn that Jesus Christ is the Word of God made flesh. This means that Jesus is always close at hand in God’s Word and when we read and listen to that word we are interacting with our Savior. God also sends people into our lives to support us. We are surrounded by family, friends, and fellow church members who serve us in many ways. Jesus Christ himself comes to us physically in the Lord’s Supper. As we gather at the altar each and every week, we see, touch, and taste Jesus in the bread and wine of the Sacrament of the Altar.
All of these are ways the Lord sustains us. We cry out “Is the Lord among us or not?” and he responds by sustaining us through his Word and Sacraments, and through the love and support we receive from those God has placed around us.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, we often wonder where you are or what you are doing. Thank you for coming to us in the means of grace. For giving us your word where we can interact with you. We pray that you would continue to sustain your church through your word and sacraments to remain faithful to life everlasting. Amen
