Comfort Zone
From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord. - Genesis 12:8

Genesis 12:1-9 is about God’s call to Abram to leave his homeland to go to the unknown land of Cannan. This bible story always speaks to me in many ways. Dave and I have served at many congregations in several states. Each Call brought about new challenges as a wife and mother. The first was finding housing and making the children comfortable with the changes happening to their new normal. The next was those tedious tasks of getting new dentists, doctors, and just where you are going to grocery shop. Some moves were easier than others and some posed some true challenges. These moves were all done with our current modern conveniences. We have the internet to search out things, we have realtors, and we have all the modern luxuries of life today.
Abram was expected to pick up and move with no Uhaul and no set destination. His calling was very open ended. I think about that a lot. We are so spoiled as Christians today. We are rarely asked to step out of our comfort zones for the Lord. We can comfortably go to church on Sunday and work without a change to our routines. And maybe that is the point we are missing. Maybe we just want to be comfortable Christians, but maybe God is asking us to get uncomfortable. When was the last time we talked about Christ to a co-worker, neighbor, or acquaintance who we don’t know is already a Christian? When was the last time we have made our own budget feel uncomfortable for someone else to feel some comfort? When did we remotely sacrifice our time or comforts to share what Christ gave up so willingly for us? As we prepare for His resurrection at Easter during this season of Lent, let us find a way to get uncomfortable for Christ. What calling is Christ setting before you to do this Lent? Imagine if we each took one step outside our comfort zone for the Lord the impacts that could take place on others' relationship with God. It might be uncomfortable for us but it might make their day, and even eternity, much more comfortable.
Prayer:
Lord, remind us that you are with us when we are called into places or situations that are uncomfortable. Give us the strenght of your spirit and the knowledge that your ways are good. Amen.
