And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.” Isaiah 6:7

In Isaiah 6, the prophet Isaiah sees something that perhaps no one else has seen. He is provided with a vision of God in His temple, with angels all around Him. And in that moment, Isaiah responds in a way that perhaps we would also. “I am lost!” Isaiah recognizes that he is a sinner and does not belong there!
In the sacrament, we are invited to sit at the Lord’s Table where Jesus’ body and blood is present for us. As we approach the table, we echo Isaiah’s confession. We are sinners too. We are not worthy to sit at His table. Yet, Jesus gives. Jesus provides. And just as the angel touches a burning coal to Isaiah’s lips to cleanse him, we hear the same loving words of God as we receive the sacrament. “This has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”
Prayer:
Dear Jesus, in no way shape or form am I worthy of receiving the gifts that you continue to give. Yet, in the midst of my sin, you say unto me, “take and eat, take and drink. This is given and shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins.” I thank you for this good and salutary gift, and pray that you may bless me to live out my faith anew each day. Amen.
